Working within the IKEA’s store design parameters, SSM provided and install Kingspan’s 4” thick foam wall panels and then fabricated, custom flashings in various sizes and sections. The wall panels were typically 48 inches tall x 35 feet long and ran both horizontally and vertically depending upon location and color. Canopies are clad with shop fabricated flat sheet components.
Utilizing IKEA’s unique color scheme, derived from Sweden’s flag, the architects continue to refine the iconic vocabulary of the Swedish retailer’s stores. The Kansas City store is almost 360,000 square feet in size.
Although not LEED certified, IKEA prides itself on being a friend to the environment. SSM worked to minimize waste by laying out the components so to maximize yields.
