Solar Array

Structural Steel Support System

Description

Burns & McDonnell, one of the world’s largest engineering firms, wanted to offset their energy needs with solar energy.  What better place to do that than at their head quarters here in Kansas City.

Once the array size was determined, they turned to SSM to fabricate the six solar panel support elements and Mark One Electric to install the solar panels.

Constructed from structural steel components, with laser cut steel plate brackets, the components were laid out in our shop, jigged up and welded as assemblies to be attached to steel light poles that were recycled from a previous parking lot remodel effort.  All components were then powder coated.

In order to facilitate a quick installation sequence in the field, all components were cut from the same templates, over a three week time frame during August of 2008.
