A seed is a marker for rebirth and, considering this new library sprung up inside of an old grocery store, that became an appropriate metaphor.
Studio KCA was selected to create a sculptural piece for the library and they used an abstracted elm tree, seed pod as their source of inspiration.
On the exterior of the pod is a satin, non-directional polish stainless steel finish. Carefully folded fins mimic the appearance of “wings” that help disperse the seed to the winds.
The two forms appear to have just split open and the mirror polish stainless steel interior radiates out the sun’s light – as if the genesis of an idea is about to burst forth.
Each element is about 14′ tall and almost 9′ wide at the base and SSM created the interior structural support system. With the faceted surface, each band of the stainless cladding wraps around the form as a continuous element. Because of the element’s taper, each band was individual and unique to its location. This required us to create a label for each component during the fabrication process.
