Description

Known for the beautiful stained glass window visible from Rainbow Boulevard, Our Saviour Lutheran is also called “the bread church” due to the commitment to their food pantry ministry. Because the church is already a beacon to the community, the design team at BNIM may have used that thought in the creation of a new lantern feature during their remodeling efforts.

Using an existing stair tower form, the design team elevated that feature, turning it into a lantern or beacon for the community.

SSM used just over a thousand square feet of custom perforated, 3/16″ thick aluminum plate to clad the tower.  The panels are painted white, roughly 4′ x 8′ in size and continue around the tower, extending above it.

Down low, the panels are solids, with a brick pattern being perforated into the panels.  The pattern is derived from the brick work on the existing tower and is expressed as perforations.  The pattern then reverses as the panels are perforated and the brick pattern becomes a solid shape.

Continuing the remodel to the entry, almost 650 square feet of bent plate, louver fins create a new canopy structure.  Painted to match the tower panels, the new canopy extends the entry feature out over the landscaping, tying it all together.
