Description

“A visionary mixed-use district poised for profound economic and cultural impact.”

Design partners HNTB and Multistudio collaborated to reinvent the college stadium experience.  The Gateway District is a mixed use development that incorporates year round meeting spaces and improvements to the football stadium —  transforming the KU campus from the ground up.

SSM‘s work included the fabrication and installation of the fin elements between the light stands.  Fabricated from 1/2″ thick aluminum “T” sections that have an 8″ wide flange and are 10″ deep, these features march around the outside of the bowl, creating a signature feature of the stadium.  The top portion of the. fins is curved inward, with. a 43’. – 6″ radius, as if these are stalks of wheat, gently being blown by the wind.

Behind the fin elements, 3 different panel profiles create the cladding for the bowl.  Two profiles are painted in champagne bronze color while the third is in metallic finish.

SSM also clad the score. board, creating a new feature focal point at the open end of the bowl and installed feature elements in the interior spaces — included, but not limited to the Kriskadecor metal curtains.
