Excellence in Design Award: Design / Build Institute of America, 2016.
Construction began on the Northland Innovation Center during the summer of 2014. SSM was brought in early as part of the team to execute the various exterior cladding components.
While the building is predominately clad in metal panels, the terra cotta rain screen plays a dominate role in defining the exterior forms. Cladding systems, such as these, require a solution to manage water flow behind them and that is where our experience in flashings and trims come into play as managing water is a part of SSM’s DNA.
With architects using a wider variety of materials, that can create some coordination issues. It just makes sense for SSM to handle elements like a terra cotta cladding because they rely upon the flashing to do the heavy lifting.
